About the CALEA Implementation Unit (CIU)

CALEA implementation is directed by the CALEA Implementation Unit (CIU) of the Electronic Surveillance Technology Section, a section of the Operational Technology Division , Federal Bureau of Investigation. The CIU supports the FBI priorities of combating terrorism, espionage, and crimes of all types by ensuring the future viability of lawfully-authorized electronic surveillance. The unit is responsible for the development of overarching CALEA implementation strategies; coordination of liaison with all Governmental, law enforcement, and industry entities; consultation with law enforcement and industry regarding technical standards; deployment of technical electronic surveillance solutions; oversight of the telecommunications industry's development of capability enhancements; and the fulfillment of all legislative and regulatory CALEA requirements. CALEA implementation responsibilities are delegated to the Federal Bureau of Investigation by the Attorney General , see 28 C.F.R. § 0.85(o) .
